Considered possibly safe for use in adults no side effects have been reported when used within the dosing guidelines. This plant has been a part of Chinese medicine for centuries without problems.
However, a special precaution has been issued to pregnant and breast-feeding women to abstain from use due to lack of information. Also, a strong warning is provided to individuals suffering from auto-immune diseases due to the associated property of this plant in creating a strong immune system response. Further exciting the immune system can exacerbate auto-immune diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and multiple sclerosis, causing additional complications.
In addition to these precautions and warnings, astragalus side effects include strong cautions regarding interactions with various prescription medications. Immunosuppressants, including steroids and corticosteroids, should not be taken at the same time as astralagus. The plant is believed to activate and strengthen the immune function which is in direct contradiction to the use of immunosuppressant therapies. This makes transplant recipients poor candidates for the use of this supplement.
Another concern is the diuretic effect of this supplement. This can produce an unwanted imbalance if a patient is taking prescription diuretics for any reason. The same property can lessen the levels of lithium within the blood leading to potentially serious complications.
Patients taking beta-blockers or anticoagulants are also strongly urged to consult with their physician before taking this supplement.
Occasionally, astragalus side effects have been experienced as gastrointestinal upset and distress when taken above the recommended dosages. Allergic reactions are extremely rare and appear to manifest in individuals with existing allergies to legumes.
