Astragalus

Astragalus is an herb traditionally used in Asian medicine as a treatment for conditions such as stress, cancer and diabetes. The herb is usually combined with other medicinal herbs to treat illness and to improve the functioning of the immune system. Research appears to support the use of this herb for inhibiting the growth of certain types of tumors and other cancers. The effect of this herb on your immune system is so profound that cancer treatment professionals caution against taking it if you are also taking immunosuppressant medications.

Astragalus is used in capsule, tincture, extract and tea forms and the root of the plant contains the purported active ingredients. Many herbal preparations contain additional ginseng, angelica and licorice in the belief that this can increase energy levels and improve immunity. For most people, using this herb is safe in normal doses and in fact, this herb has been shown in initial studies to be beneficial for cardiac disease and decreased liver functioning.

Aside from benefits for pre-existing health conditions, astragalus is also a natural source of antioxidant compounds that can protect your body from damage caused by free radicals. Free radicals, which are byproducts of cellular metabolism, can cause damage to cell walls if left coursing through the body. In addition, astragalus is a natural antiviral substance that can ward off viral infections cause by airborne or surface antigens.

Taking astragalus may also help decrease the incidence of allergies by tempering the sensitivity of your immune system. The herb also shows promise in increasing blood counts in people with anemia and it may also decrease blood glucose levels in people with diabetes or pre-diabetes. Research also shows promise for the use of the herb for hepatitis which is a viral infection that can destroy the tissues of your liver.

Astragalus can be taken in different forms and daily dosages range between one and 25 grams. Dosages that are too high can cause immune system suppression and leave your body vulnerable to opportunistic infections. Children who have an active fever should not be given this herb, because it can increase the duration of the fever. The effect of this herb on breast milk is unknown and pregnant or breasfeeding women are advised to contact their doctor before using any herbal supplement.

In capsule form, this herb is available through the Solgar company as well as Nature's Way. Both contain 100 milligrams of active extract and both have positive reviews from individuals who have used the products. Standard amount for extract form is approximately 250 to 500 milligrams, up to four times daily. Tea is made by boiling 3 to 6 grams of dried root in water and drinking the steeped tea three times daily.
